【内容简介】

What constitutes feminism? How does it evolve over time in China and the West? Are we truly living in a gender-symmetric world, rendering feminism obsolete? Dr Altman Yuzhu Peng will answer these questions for you. In this presentation, he will explore the necessity of incorporating a feminist lens in critical discourse studies. The discussion will commence with an examination of the rise and fall of women’s status in Euro-American and Chinese societies, illustrating the diverse trajectories of gender politics in each context. Instead of merely assessing various feminist ideas without considering their historical contingence and contemporary relevance, this talk will highlight specific challenges hindering women’s liberation within each national context, thus re-evaluating their relevance and efficacy in language research. Through a series of case studies, he will demonstrate how gender asymmetry manifests itself in both overt misogyny and pseudo-empowerment rhetoric, underscoring the transformative potential of a feminist perspective in addressing such issues. It is hoped that this presentation will stimulate further discussion on the imperative and urgency of advocating for women’s emancipation in today’s society.
【主讲人简介】
彭雨竹目前任教于华威大学应用语言学系。他的研究兴趣涵盖批判话语分析、中国研究、女权主义、性别研究和民族主义政治。他是《中国数字公共领域的女权主义阅读》的作者，以及《当代中国传播：思想的编排》（合作者：张世欣博士）和《中国、媒体和国际冲突》（合作者：陶敏思博士）的共同编辑。作为第一或唯一作者，他在SSCI索引的学术期刊上发表了超过20篇同行评审的研究文章。他目前担任《女权主义媒体研究》等知名学术期刊的编辑委员会成员。
Dr Altman Yuzhu Peng is a critical discourse analyst currently based at the University of Warwick’s Applied Linguistics Department. His research interests span China studies, feminism, gender studies, and nationalist politics. He is author of A Feminist Reading of China’s Digital Public Sphere and co-editor of Communications in Contemporary China: Orchestrating Thinking (with Dr Shixin Ivy Zhang) and China, Media, and International Conflicts (with Nicole Talmacs). As first or sole author, he has published over 20 peer-reviewed research articles in SSCI-indexed academic journals. He currently sits on the editorial boards of such notable academic journals at Feminist Media Studies.
